Gong Mei is a white tea grade that’s very similar to a Shou Mei, except for with more tea buds, slightly smaller tea leaves and fewer big twigs. This tea comes from our charcoal roast white tea farmer farmer Wen, and this is one of his oldest charcoal roast tea cakes before he started implementing charcoal roast for all of his white teas. This tea cake has been aged for 7 years, and it has more herbal and lotus leaf like aroma compared to a Shou Mei, yet still quite sweet with a thick smooth viscosity on the palate.
A popular local saying in Fu Jian is ‘one-year-old white tea is only tea, three-year-old is medicinal herb and seven-year-old is treasure’. Similar to Pu Er, the aromatic compounds of white tea change with time and polyphenols (known for antioxidant properties) increase with time giving this tea a high collecting value because even more changes occur as time goes by enhancing the aroma and nutritional value.
