Experience one of the best green teas from the heart of China’s Xi Hu region with our exclusive Xi Hu Long Jing tea. Known worldwide for its delicate taste and rich history, this premium Long Jing green tea is sourced from a village called Yang Mei Ling 杨梅岭 at Shi Feng (Lion’s Peak). Long Jing and Shi Feng are the most prestigious areas within the core production zone, located southwest of Xi Hu in Hang Zhou. Only teas from this specific area can be called Xi Hu Long Jing, while those grown outside are simply referred to as Long Jing tea.
Our Shi Feng Long Jing is handpicked before Qing Ming, ensuring the highest quality with the standard of 1 bud and 2 leaves. The Liu family is currently the fourth generation of making Xi Hu Long Jing. Master Liu is an intangible cultural heritage inheritor for his pan firing skill. His family’s tea fields are scattered in a few different areas on the hills around Yang Mei Ling village. There are three cultivars in his tea fields, the Long Jing 43, the Long Jing 108 and the heirloom. We visited the largest one at an elevation of around 250 meters. Even though Xi Hu Long Jing’s quality doesn’t majorly depend on elevation, higher altitude does provide a cleaner and more humid environment. The soil has more stones and sands, which is precisely what the Long Jing tea trees like. The batch we chose this year underwent a traditional yet modern production method: machine-assisted kill green to preserve freshness, followed by hand-drying by master Liu to maintain the tea’s natural flavors and aroma. By combining the two methods, the tea also becomes more affordable to tea drinkers.
The core production area is a very small area of about 100 square kilometers, and the Shi Feng area is about 60 square kilometers. The real Xi Hu Long Jing tea never yields a large production quantity, and the before Ming Qian higher quality tea is often sold on the very same day of its production. We had to make a reservation for the batches with master Liu.
Explore Our Xi Hu Long Jing Green Tea Education Package (with a TWIST)!
This tea tasting package is designed to give you a comprehensive understanding of Long Jing green tea, allowing you to compare a wide range of quality, flavors and experiences. By experiencing four pre-Qing Ming Long Jings from three different regions, you’ll not only appreciate the nuanced flavors but also learn to identify the authentic and inferior versions of Long Jing tea that flood the market. You will get 10g for each tea, and you will need 3g for brewing each time. Our goal is to encourage you to try different styles and guide you to identify the one that fits your needs the most.
- Shi Feng Xi Hu Long Jing 43 – handpicked from the heart of Shi Feng, Farmer Liu’s artisanal tea offers a smooth, floral profile. This represents the highest quality Long Jing both in theory and in practice.
- Shi Feng Xi Hu Long Jing heirloom — handpicked also from the Liu family’s tea field and made also by master Liu. This heirloom cultivar Long Jing yields an even smaller production compared to Long Jing 43, and the production time is later than 43, since this cultivar blooms later. You should sense how this tea is more intense compared to 43.
- Qian Dao Lake Long Jing – A high-quality Long Jing tea from a region that is at close distance from Xi Hu. While it’s a good tea, it serves as a comparison to the true essence of Xi Hu. Its taste is more subtle and lighter, but with certain nuances missing, it helps you understand the key differences that make Xi Hu Long Jing so special.
- Long Jing from neither near Xi Hu nor in Hang Zhou, but planted in a completely far away region in China. These teas are commonly considered the counterfeiters of Xi Hu Long Jing. It serves as a valuable learning tool for distinguishing authentic Long Jing from imitations.
What You’ll Learn:
- The difference between Long Jing teas from Xi Hu vs. other regions.
- How artisanal production and machine-assisted processes influence flavor, aroma, and quality.
- How to identify low-quality Long Jing and avoid counterfeit teas commonly found in the market.
*THE TWIST*:
Instead of telling you which tea you are drinking, we decided to throw in a little guessing game. Each tea will be marked by a number, and you will be asked to guess. After placing an order, you will receive a separate Google shared doc that contains the answer and more specific details on each tea. However, if you do not wish to participate, please leave us a note and we will send you the packages with each tea identified.
