Full Description

Among the many treasured lineages of Phoenix Dan Cong, Song Zhong (宋种) holds a place of special reverence. Its name is traditionally linked to the Southern Song Dynasty, with local legends telling that tea plants connected to the Song court were brought south during the dynasty’s final years and eventually took root on Phoenix Mountain. While the exact origins remain part of local tea lore, generations of tea farmers have preserved this cultivar as some of the most precious expressions of Phoenix Mountain’s tea heritage.

The authentic Song Zhong is valued not for a single striking aroma, but for its depth, refinement, and remarkable character. The tea embodies the essence of old-tree Dan Cong: a layered fragrance, a rich yet elegant texture, and a lingering sweetness that continues long after each sip. Unlike some Dan Cong varieties known for an immediate and powerful fragrance, Song Zhong reveals its complexity slowly.

New layers emerge with each infusion. The aroma unfolds gracefully, revealing notes of mountain orchid, wild honey, ripe fruit, and a subtle mineral freshness. Its liquor is smooth and full-bodied, carrying the distinctive shan yun (山韵)—the deep mountain resonance created by the unique environment of Phoenix Mountain’s old tea gardens.

From the coastal area in Canton province, Phoenix Mountain possesses mineral-rich soil and is constantly surrounded by mists and fog, covered by wild tea tress and tea farms, as well as the folklore of the Phoenix Dan Cong Tea. Many wild tea trees are at least 100 to 200 years old. It’s a special type of Oolong treasured for its highly distinctive natural aroma that mimics certain flower or fruit aroma, and is well-known for its ten major aromatic groups. Dan Cong teas are named and classified by their aromas, and the aroma is never artificially added or perfumed but exclusively cultivated as a cultivar.
