Full Description
Dong Fang Hong (东方红), meaning “The East is Red,” is a distinctive expression of Phoenix Dan Cong known for its captivating gardenia-like fragrance and graceful floral character. Many also associate it with the Chinese communist classic song of the same name. This is a more prestigious cultivar from the high mountain range and its beauty lies not only in its aroma, but in the balance between fragrance, texture, and the lingering sweetness that unfolds through each infusion.
Grown in the traditional tea gardens of Phoenix Mountain in Chaozhou, this Dan Cong opens with an enchanting floral bouquet reminiscent of fresh gardenia blossoms, complemented by notes of ripe fruit, honey, and a subtle creamy sweetness. The fragrance is elegant and refined, expressive without being overpowering.
Dong Fang Hong is appreciated by tea lovers who enjoy the more graceful side of Dan Cong. Rather than relying on intensity alone, this tea reveals its complexity through layers, bright floral aromas in the first infusions, deeper fruit sweetness as the leaves open, and a clean, elegant finish that invites another cup.
Cultivated in mineral rich soil, this tea thrives in the coastal environment in Canton province on Phoenix Mountain. Both wild and farmed, these tea trees can reach the ripe old age of 200 years. This special type of Oolong is recognized for its highly distinctive natural aroma that mimics certain flower or fruit aroma. Believed to be the ancestor of all Oolong teas, it’s well-known for its ten aromatic categories and its rich and complex flavor.
Local tea scholars and connoisseurs from China study and organize the hand-picked tea into hundreds of aromatic subgroups. Its aroma is never artificially added or perfumed but exclusively cultivated, and each aroma comes from the tea plant’s natural aromatic compound.
